About hoya cuttings
What does a hoya cutting look like? How to root a received hoya cutting? How long does a hoya cutting take to root?
A hoya cutting is a part of the shoot that has at least one pair of leaves, in this place there is a so-called leaf node. Hoya plants form new roots in the leaf node and also in the shoot part, thus making the hoya propagation process easy, and the new plant grows the same as the mother plant from which the cutting was taken.
Will the new plant be exactly the same as the mother plant? "Yes" - genetically, but ... the environment in which the hoya grows is also important for the growth of hoya plants. A simple example - there are hoya plants that really like the sun, then the leaves acquire a beautiful color, as we, hoya enthusiasts, say, the leaf has sun-kissed. Such an example is hoya Priktai. However, if this hoya is not exposed to sunlight (grows in a darker place), then the leaves will be more green and the hoya will not show all its charm. But more on this another time, today is a different topic:)
I use the following cutting rooting options:
1) Rooting in water - the simplest way - put it in a glass of water and wait for the cutting to appear roots and then plant it in a substrate and put it in a bright and warm place to continue rooting and start growing.
2) Rooting in a substrate - put a cutting with 1 or 2 leaf nodes in a small pot, water it a little, put it in a greenhouse or put a polyethylene bag on it (provides higher air humidity, which speeds up the rooting process), provide heat of 20-25 degrees and light and start waiting.
From my experience, I use rooting in water for easier-to-grow hoyas, while for hoyas that are more difficult to root/grow, I still choose the second option, as there is a greater guarantee that the cutting will not rot. I would also like to add that for large-leaved hoyas (for example, Meredithii GPS1105) 1-2 leaves are enough to successfully get a new plant, and a cutting with 1-2 leaves is also easier to root in a greenhouse, as it takes up less space. In turn, for small-leaved hoyas (for example, Lacunosas), it is better to choose a cutting with 3-5 leaf nodes, as it will root easier if there are more leaves and nodes. Although I have also been very successful in rooting a single-leaf cutting of small-leaved hoyas (for example, Lacunosa White Pearl or Lacunosa Violet).
How long does it take to root a hoya?
There are many different types here - there are hoyas that give roots very quickly, but some growth activities - a flourishing leaf or shoot - you have to wait a long time. These are hoyas that take root quickly, but growth and development are slow. From my experience, there are hoyas that start quickly - take root and bloom the first leaves - but then stop, because they are engaged in additional root growth and then changes in the aboveground part are not visible for a long time, but this does not mean that nothing is happening:) However, there are hoyas that also take root very difficult, whose growth is very slow, there may be different options here. Before buying each new hoya, I look at the link - here - you will find very good comprehensive information about hoya species and varieties.
Another observation of mine - most hoyas grow in leaps and bounds, at some point you see a well-developed mustache with a couple of spreading leaves and you are amazed, because it seems like yesterday there was nothing there :) Conclusion - a hoya grower needs a lot of patience :)
