About large pots and smaller pots

What pots to root hoya cuttings in? What pots to grow and care for hoya? What pot to choose to start growing your first, or first two or even first three:) hoyas?

It is an undeniable fact that hoya is easier to grow in a small and preferably transparent plastic pot or glass, because then overwatering the hoya is not so dangerous:) And it is definitely necessary to root the hoya cutting in a small plastic transparent glass, for the reason that you can see if and how the hoya cutting is rooting. I have hoya that still grow in ordinary plastic or clay flower pots and feel good. However, most of the hoya in my collection still grow in plastic glasses that have holes cut out for excess water to drain. I then put these plastic cups in decorative pots without drainage holes, which also serve as support for the hoya itself, which becomes quite heavy as it grows and plastic pots can easily tip over. And you definitely want your hoya to bloom, so the pot should be relatively small, because hoyas start blooming best when the roots have outgrown their pot, although there are exceptions:) Hoyas like their roots to be tightly packed in the pot, so the hoya can devote itself to growing and blooming. Therefore, usually, when the hoya has taken root and started growing and you transplant it into a slightly larger pot, a certain period of time may pass when it seems that the hoya is doing nothing, because the hoya's growth is not visually visible... except in the root part, if you have planted the hoya in a transparent pot. Hoya is engaged in root growth, and until she properly fills the free space with roots, she does not particularly want to give new shoots, not to mention flowers.

However, at first I urge you to stick to the classics:) - a plastic transparent pot with drainage holes cut out, so that you can see what is happening with the root system of your pet. Later, when you get to know your hoya, you can also choose other pots. And another important principle - even if your hoya has already grown quite large and it seems to you that there is not enough space for the roots in the pot, do not rush to transplant it into larger pots. Hoyas can easily drop their roots and you will have to start the growing process all over again, taking a cutting from the plant or trying to regrow the roots of the same large plant, but this will take time, during which the hoya itself will not grow and bloom, and there is a risk that it may die altogether. But about repotting hoya another time:)

For rooting hoya cuttings, I use plastic cups without drainage holes with a capacity of 40 g or 100 g, adjusting the pot to the size of the hoya leaf, just like we try on new dresses or suits for ourselves:). However, when the cutting has rooted and both the roots and maybe a new shoot or leaf are already visible, then you can think about repotting. I transplant it into a plastic cup of the next size, but this time with drainage holes and a capacity of 150 g or 200 g. I transplant the hoya that have already grown well into a larger plastic cup with drainage holes and a capacity of 400 g. And a large part of my hoya grows in plastic cups of this volume.

But in my collection there are also very powerful hoyas that grow in normal clay or plastic pots and I don't even think about repotting them again:) These are their pots for many years to come, if only it were a question of replacing the top layer of the substrate. But these are really large hoyas, such as Macrophylla Snow Queen or Curtisii, which have a lot of very long seedlings planted in one pot. For a visual idea, watch the video on my feel channel about these two hoyas - here and here.

And in conclusion, I added another very valuable link, where comprehensive information is available, including about the development of hoya - will it be a large hoya, will its development be average or will the hoya remain small, delicate and miniature. The link is available here.
