Which hoya to choose as the first for your hobby?
Which hoyas to choose as the first to start your new passion? And so that this hobby really grows into a real passion? And so that a the little secret thought does not suddenly creep in - "Hoyas, well, no, it's too complicated or it's too slow or it's so ... and in general, it's not for me ... :)", but so that it is a joyfully exciting process, full of a sense of satisfaction?
I genuinely recommend that you first start with those hoya species or varieties that are mostly recognized as easy-to-grow hoya species or varieties. Yes, because there are hoya that you will have to negotiate hard with and for a long time until they accept you:) Easy-to-grow and maintain varieties can include, for example, some varieties of Carnosa, but not all, some varieties of Pubicalix can also be included, as well as some varieties of Finlaysonii or Callistophylla, but again - not all!
I would like to emphasize - some varieties - not the entire species as a whole, because, for example, I have 2 varieties of Pubicalix in my collection, one of which grows quite smoothly and without any special problems, while the other variety is very slow-growing, it grows a couple of leaves and then rests for a long, long time, because it is tired after so much work:) Probably hoya enthusiasts with more experience here will say that I have not provided the slow-growing Pubicalix with the right agrotechnics and I will agree, because I still don't completely understand and have not yet found the right care tactics specifically for this slow variety, but we are still both together and we're both actively looking for compromises:) and trying to answer the question - "To be or not to be?" :) And in my experience of growing hoyas, this is not the only example, there are several more.
But the question today is - "which hoya to choose as my first?" and not "which hoyas should I avoid as my firsts?":) So I will list those hoya varieties that I started with, and which really grow excellently and some even bloom, without requiring too much of my attention. And therefore I have no doubt that they will grow, bloom and delight you too!
So my recommendation, based on the plants in my hoya collection and my experience growing them, is as follows - start your acquaintance with one of the hoyas mentioned below:
- Carnosa Dark Red,
- Carnosa "Crimson Queen",
- Pubicalix (a fast-growing variety, whose exact name I unfortunately don't know),
- Macrophylla Albomarginata,
- Caudata Sumatra,
- Finlaysonii sp.,
- Macrophylla Snow Queen,
- Finlaysonii sp.Chicken Farm splash leaves,
- Callistophylla big leaves (Sabah, Borneo),
- Incrassata variegata Moonshadow,
- Crassipetiolata (round leaves),
- Meredithii GPS1105,
- Finlaysonii EPC-317,
- sp. Malaysia 06,
- Ricardo SS13-05,
- Priktai,
- Linearis,
- Kentiana variegata,
- Krohniana black and
- all Lacunosa that I have in my collection (at the moment only in the form of new cuttings or new plants, because they are a recent addition to the hoya collection).
I think that if you follow a few basic steps/things when growing your first hoyas (but about the basic stuff in another post:)), then you will find a common language with the hoyas listed above right away:)
These hoyas that I have named are also my warm recommendation to start your new and endlessly exciting hobby - growing hoyas!
