The story of Hoya Priktai
Hoya Priktai is another hoya that fully corresponds to the statement that hoyas are easy to care for! Hoya, which is absolutely unpretentious and grateful for minimal care, will be very grateful for an indirect amount of light and a small amount of air humidity.
This is a hoya that does not know how to turn yellow and drop its leaves (read - "make a fuss":)), if you have slightly forgotten to water it or, on the contrary, watering has been a little more abundant. Only in worse growing conditions - if you happen to get too much moisture, it is cool and too little light - can you also show a rare spot on one of your thick and beautiful leaves, as happened to me last fall. Of course, I immediately corrected myself, realizing that I had used the modesty of my hoya Priktai a little too much:)
I received hoya Priktai on May 10, 2023 as a rooted single-leaf cutting with a long tendril, but after a couple of weeks I transplanted it into my improved indoor flower soil substrate. Probably thanks to the spring and also hoya Priktai herself, after the transplant she started growing well, I also had to transplant it again in the fall, because hoya leaves are large, thick and heavy, easily overturning the small pot. Growth continued slowly during the winter, because the hoya was growing on the east-facing windowsill. In the summer of 2025, there was an attempt to form a flower bud, but it still did not bloom to the end and I transplanted hoya Priktai again, already in a proper flower pot without a drainage hole, in the usual improved indoor flower soil substrate (read about substrates here). This summer (2026) I no longer plan to repot because I want to see my hoya Priktai flowers:)
If the hoya Priktai grows in good light, the leaves get a dark border, the few leaf spots turn pink, and it all looks very beautiful. Last summer I noticed that when it was very hot, the new leaves grew very thick, but at lower temperatures the new leaves formed thinner. But this is also conditional, because in general the leaves of the hoya Priktai are already quite thick and the hoya Priktai itself becomes an impressively tall hoya over the years.
Hoya Priktai cuttings are very easy to root and grow easily, but the growth period alternates with rest periods, or rather, it blooms a few new leaves and then stops for a while. In the summer season, growth, as with all hoyas, is faster than in the winter period, but a pronounced period of rest, at least for my hoya Prikta, is not characteristic of the winter period. Currently, after 2.5 years, my hoya Prikta has become quite large, has already moved from the windowsill to a flower stand, next to a shelf with plant lamps. Since the amount of light is less and not as direct as when growing on the east-facing windowsill, the two new winter leaves have blossomed very large and slightly curled, which I explain with the reduced air humidity that is observed in our rooms during the winter heating season. I really, really like these two dark and curled leaves :), both are still continuing to mature, I wonder what they will become. Hoya Priktai continues to work on the next leaves and I am impatiently waiting to see what miracle of nature my Priktai will create again:)
Hoya has already shared several cuttings that I have rooted in a pot and grown in self-watering pots.
And in conclusion - before I bought this hoya Priktai for my collection, I was a little prejudiced:), I thought that such a beautiful hoya must be difficult to care for and I would hardly succeed. But we, Latvians, have a good saying - "Fear has big eyes!" - hoya Priktai is easy to grow, and in its modesty very generous, giving a lot of satisfaction to its grower!
Rest assured, you will also enjoy growing and caring for your hoya Priktai!
Good luck!
